FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE— Police are investigating reports of possible arson and have increased fire prevention measures, a spokesperson said Sunday.

Christodoulos Konsolos, police communication officer, said motorized patrols have been stepped up in forested areas at risk and in fire-affected zones to protect property and assist the public.

Authorities are coordinating with other services to monitor regions considered vulnerable to malicious fire-setting.

Additional patrols are also being carried out in damaged areas.

A 37-year-old man was arrested after midnight near the village of Prodromos, allegedly carrying explosives.

A court ordered him held for one day.

Police urged citizens to report any information related to fires, property threats or suspicious activity by calling 1460.
