FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE  — A disoriented green sea turtle was rescued and safely returned to its natural habitat after straying inland, thanks to swift action by the Environmental Department of the British Sovereign Base Areas and a dedicated volunteer from the WSBA Turtlewatch program.

Officials said the turtle, a member of the endangered species Chelonia mydas, was found wandering far from the shoreline, raising concerns for its survival.

Green turtles rely heavily on proximity to the sea for feeding and orientation.

A base environmental officer spotted the animal and, with assistance from the volunteer, transported it back to the water without injury.

Authorities praised the coordinated response and emphasized the importance of community involvement in protecting Cyprus’s marine biodiversity.
