Rescue teams have recovered 370 bodies following a massive landslide that struck the remote mountain village of Tarasin in Sudan’s Darfur region over the weekend.

The United Nations estimates the death toll could reach as high as 1,000, but efforts to confirm the scale of the disaster have been hampered by the village’s isolation and lack of access to heavy equipment.

Search crews are using shovels and, in some cases, digging with their bare hands in hopes of locating the missing.

The landslide, triggered by days of heavy rainfall, flattened the village in the Marrah Mountains, a region already strained by ongoing civil conflict and humanitarian crisis.

Attempts to transport machinery into the area have so far failed due to terrain and security challenges.
