At least 46 people were killed Sunday in renewed fighting between Israel and Hamas, despite a ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this month, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.
The Israeli military said two soldiers were killed in Rafah after Hamas fighters fired an anti-tank missile and opened fire on troops dismantling infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched airstrikes and artillery shelling across multiple areas of Gaza.
Palestinian health officials reported 44 deaths from the Israeli attacks.
Mahmoud Basal, spokesman for Gaza Civil Defense, said emergency crews responded to more than 20 distress calls throughout the day.
By Sunday evening, the Israeli army announced it had resumed implementation of the ceasefire, citing political directives following what it described as Hamas violations.
The truce, in effect since Oct. 10, was mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye with U.S. backing.
It calls for a halt to hostilities, prisoner exchanges, partial Israeli troop withdrawals, and the flow of humanitarian aid and fuel into Gaza.
Both sides have accused each other of breaching the agreement.
