A mobile phone battery exploded in a school dormitory in southeastern Poland early Thursday, sending eight teenagers to hospital and forcing an evacuation, local fire services said.
The blast occurred before 1 a.m. in the town of Ropczyce while a 16‑year‑old boy was using the phone, injuring his hands. Smoke filled the building, prompting all residents to evacuate. Seven other teenagers reported feeling unwell and were hospitalized along with the boy.
Firefighters ventilated the dormitory and later allowed most students to return. Authorities said no fire resulted from the blast and an investigation is underway.
