A spike in flu and respiratory infections has pushed state hospitals in Cyprus to overcrowding, leading to long waits in emergency departments.

According to Alithia, the PASIDI union’s state‑hospital personnel branch reported that rising admissions have left facilities operating beyond capacity.

Patients are being held for hours in emergency units because no beds are available, the union said.

In a statement, the unit voiced concern over the strain on hospitals and said admission procedures can no longer be managed effectively under current conditions.

PASIDI called on all stakeholders to meet immediately to address what it described as a worsening crisis.
