The European Commission will supply 500,000 doses of foot‑and‑mouth disease vaccine from the EU antigen bank to help contain the outbreak detected in the Turkish Cypriot community.

The vaccines will be delivered in the coming weeks and administered to all susceptible animals as part of a wider containment and prevention strategy. The decision follows confirmed cases in the occupied village of Lapathos in December.

According to the Commission, authorities in the Turkish Cypriot community have already imposed quarantine measures, restricted animal movements and implemented disinfection protocols and strict biosecurity rules.

Through the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, Brussels has also provided diagnostic tests, laboratory consumables, disinfectants, protective clothing and other essential materials.

EU funding has additionally enabled the hiring of private veterinarians to support local capacity for surveillance and vaccination.

The Commission said the assistance builds on long‑standing cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot community in animal‑health management, allowing for a rapid and coordinated response to emerging threats.
