Cyprus Civil Defence has issued detailed safety recommendations to the public as heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and possible tornadoes are expected to affect the island.

The advisory follows a Meteorological Department notice warning of unsettled weather conditions over the coming hours.

Civil Defence urged residents to take preventive measures to reduce risks from flooding, including ensuring drains and gutters are clear, securing loose objects outdoors, protecting basements in flood‑prone areas, and avoiding unnecessary travel during intense rainfall.

During flooding, the public is advised to avoid underground spaces, not attempt to cross flooded roads on foot or by vehicle, stay away from power lines and avoid areas prone to landslides.

After floodwaters recede, authorities warn that hazards may remain, including damaged road surfaces, unstable ground and contaminated water.

Residents are urged to wait for official clearance before beginning cleanup work and to disconnect electricity and water supplies before entering affected buildings.

The advisory also includes guidance for tornado conditions, such as securing outdoor items, staying away from windows and moving to safe interior areas.

Those outdoors are urged to move away from the tornado’s path or lie flat in a low area if escape is not possible.

For strong winds, Civil Defence recommends avoiding unnecessary movement, securing objects that may be blown away, avoiding coastal activities and ensuring outdoor workers are protected, including suspending work at construction sites if needed.
