FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus has marked European Natura 2000 Day highlighting the importance of protecting its natural heritage and urging public vigilance against forest fires, according to the Department of Forests.

Cyprus has one of the highest percentages of land within the Natura 2000 network among European Union countries. More than 70% of these protected areas are forests, which officials describe as the backbone of conservation efforts.

The Department of Forests said it manages state forests with a focus on sustainable development, maintaining ecological balance, and safeguarding biodiversity.

Conservation strategies include protecting native flora and fauna, enhancing habitats, and promoting the cultural and environmental significance of Cyprus’s forested areas.

Officials have stressed the need for fire prevention as the summer fire season begins. The Department of Forests is in full operational readiness, investing in prevention measures and rapid response capabilities.

“The Forest Needs You. Protect It from Fire,” is the official campaign slogan, calling on the public to exercise caution and avoid activities that could spark wildfires.

The Department of Forests said it remains committed to preserving and protecting Cyprus’s forests for future generations.
