Cyprus’ Consumer Protection Service has urged parents to follow proper safety procedures when selecting and installing child car seats, warning that incorrect use can significantly increase the risk of injury in a crash.

The agency said that choosing a seat unsuitable for a child’s age, weight or height, as well as improper installation or fastening, can “reduce their effectiveness and increase the risk of injury,” according to the announcement.

It stressed the need to use certified seats and to comply strictly with manufacturer instructions and safety standards.

As part of its public‑awareness efforts, the service has published an information leaflet titled “Child Car Seats” on its website, offering guidance for both consumers and economic operators.

For consumers, the agency recommends: • Carefully reading and following installation and safety instructions. • Checking compliance markings and product information before purchase. • Choosing new, recently approved seats that meet current safety standards. • Preferring ISOFIX systems where possible. • Ensuring the seat is compatible with the vehicle and appropriate for the child’s size and age.

For economic operators, it advises: • Providing clear and accurate information on product characteristics and proper installation. • Implementing action plans for recalls or non‑compliant products to ensure timely consumer notification.

For more information, consumers and businesses may contact the service’s offices in Nicosia (22200929, 22200928, 22200926), Limassol (25819150), Larnaca/Famagusta (24816160) and Paphos (26804613).
