AKEL’s Limassol district organization has condemned plans by the British Bases to install 32 antennas at Akrotiri and to expropriate 340 “skales” of land, saying the area is already heavily burdened.
The party said 18 antennas installed in 2018 were described as temporary and were expected to be removed in 2025, “something that did not happen.” It voiced support for the mayor of Kourion, local authorities and residents who have objected to the project.
AKEL said the wider Akrotiri area has faced “significant military and operational pressure” in recent years and argued that the expansion increases security risks for Cyprus. It also cited public concerns about potential health effects.
The party called on the Cypriot government and President Nikos Christodoulides to act “immediately and effectively” to prevent the project from going ahead.
