Cyprus posts third-highest inflation rate in the EU as price pressures accelerate sharply

Harmonised inflation jumps from 4.4% to 5.2% in a single month, far outpacing eurozone average, Cypriot press reports

Cyprus recorded the third-highest inflation rate among EU member states, according to newly published Eurostat data cited by the Cypriot newspaper Haravgi, which described a sudden acceleration in price pressures across the island’s economy.

The paper reported that harmonised inflation (HICP) rose from 4.4% in July to 5.2% in August 2026, up from zero a year earlier, compared with an inflation rate of 3.2% across the eurozone and the wider EU over the same period. On a monthly basis, prices in Cyprus rose 1.5%, more than three times the 0.4% recorded across the eurozone and EU as a whole.

In a separate report, the paper said rising prices had spread across every sector of the economy, further eroding household incomes and straining the budgets of small and medium-sized businesses. It noted that the annual rate of increase in the harmonised consumer price index had climbed by 1.5 percentage points between July and August, reaching 5.2%.
