Driver clocked at 161km/h in 100km/h zone refused to stop, leading officers on pursuit before being intercepted
Police arrested a 26-year-old man last night to assist with an investigation into speeding and a number of other road traffic offences, after he led officers on a pursuit along the Limassol–Paphos motorway.
Officers from the Traffic Police headquarters, operating a speed check at Avdimou at around 10.30pm, detected a car travelling at 161km/h in a zone where the legal limit is 100km/h. When the driver was signalled to stop, he failed to do so and instead continued driving, according to police.
Officers pursued the vehicle, which they said was being driven carelessly and dangerously, with the driver repeatedly ignoring signals from police to pull over. He was eventually intercepted after turning onto the old Paphos–Limassol road.
A subsequent check established that the driver, 26, had neither a valid driving licence nor an insurance certificate for the vehicle. He was arrested for the offences committed in his presence and taken into custody. Breath and drug tests carried out on him both returned negative results.
The investigation is continuing under Koukklia police station.
