An outbreak of viral gastroenteritis aboard the cruise ship Ambition has been confirmed as norovirus, authorities in the Gironde prefecture said Wednesday.
Officials said no severe cases have been reported and asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to disembark. The ship, operated by Britain’s Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived in Bordeaux on Tuesday evening with about 1,700 passengers and crew. Disembarkation was initially halted after the death of a passenger in his 90s, which may be linked to a “gastroenteritis‑like illness.” Around 80 people on board had reported digestive symptoms.
Tests carried out at Bordeaux University Hospital confirmed the viral origin of the outbreak. Infected passengers will remain isolated on board, and quarantine and hygiene measures will continue. The cruise line will decide whether to proceed with the itinerary once further medical information is available.
Norovirus, which spreads easily in closed environments, is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis.
