Cyprus is preparing to install artificial‑intelligence traffic cameras capable of detecting drivers using mobile phones, the transport minister told lawmakers.
Public Works and Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis said during the first post‑election meeting of the House Transport Committee that the goal is to reduce both traffic accidents and traffic violations. The AI‑equipped cameras, he said, will identify whether drivers are holding or using a phone while driving.
Vafeadis stressed the cameras are intended to improve road safety, not “trap” motorists, adding that only such technology can effectively deter mobile‑phone use behind the wheel.
He also said fixed speed cameras will be placed at the start and end of certain road sections to calculate average speed, allowing authorities to issue penalties when limits are exceeded.
