The Republic of Cyprus is set to bring its first central electricity storage units online in early 2027, the island’s Energy Minister has said, in a move officials hope will help stabilise the grid and support the growing use of renewable power.
Speaking in Paphos, Michalis Damianos said the installation of the new storage units was expected to be completed before the start of summer 2027, with contracts for the projects already signed.
The minister said an initial 125 megawatts of storage capacity would be added to the electricity system, with connection permits for a further 150 megawatts already granted to private developers. The state-run Electricity Authority of Cyprus, he added, was separately pressing ahead with its own project of 180 megawatts of storage capacity.
Taken together, Mr Damianos said, the various schemes were expected to bring hundreds of megawatts of storage capacity onto the island’s grid by the end of 2027.
The batteries, he said, would begin arriving in Cyprus in early 2027, marking what officials have cast as a significant step in efforts to modernise the island’s energy infrastructure and reduce its reliance on conventional power generation.
