Gaza’s families still struggling to feed themselves without basics

Food insecurity in Gaza has eased slightly but needs remain acute, UN agencies said.

On the black market, cooking gas is unaffordable for most, forcing thousands of families to burn hazardous waste or firewood instead.

Despite an increased number of commercial and humanitarian trucks reaching Gaza, the WFP said, high market prices are putting basic food items beyond the reach of four in ten households.

A WFP survey of families in the territory found that nearly one in two households had completely run out of food at home at some point, with 22 per cent reporting this had happened more than ten times in the month before the survey.

The UN’s aid coordination office, OCHA, echoed those concerns, reporting severe shortages of key medicines used to treat chronic diseases, including insulin, materials needed for cardiac catheterisation, dialysis supplies, and critical diagnostic and monitoring equipment.
