The Republic of Cyprus has lodged a complaint with the United Nations over a memorandum agreed between Turkey and the occupied areas of Cyprus concerning the construction of an undersea natural gas pipeline.
In a letter to the United Nations, Cyprus’s Permanent Representative, Maria Michael, described the memorandum as illegal, having been concluded with what she termed the unrecognised separatist regime in the occupied areas.
She noted that Turkey’s attempt to carry out the pipeline project was proceeding without the consent of the Cypriot government and amounted to a violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.
Ms Michael urged the United Nations to convey a clear message to Turkey that it must comply with its obligations under international law, respect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus, and refrain from proceeding with what she described as an unlawful pipeline.
