Two Dengue Fever Cases and First West Nile Virus Case of the Year Recorded in Cyprus

Two cases of dengue fever were recorded in Cyprus in July, according to the spokesman for the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), Charalambos Charilaou.

The first case involved a woman with a recent travel history.

During her examination at hospital, a healthcare worker came into contact with her blood and was subsequently also diagnosed with the virus. Both patients have since recovered and been discharged.

Dengue fever is typically transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Direct human-to-human transmission is extremely rare and does not occur through ordinary social contact.

Separately, the first case of West Nile virus recorded in Cyprus this year has also been identified. It involves an elderly patient with no travel history, who is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at Nicosia General Hospital.

The Ministry of Health noted that the virus is spread mainly through the bite of infected mosquitoes, and that those who have contracted it do not go on to transmit it further.
