Cyprus’s summer hunting season began today and will run every Sunday until 13 September, as well as on Wednesdays 2, 9 and 16 September.
An estimated 17,000 hunters are expected to head into the countryside, with the relevant authorities on full alert throughout the period.
The Game and Fauna Service, the Cyprus Hunting Federation and the Forestry Department have called on hunters to exercise particular care, both for their own safety and for the protection of the environment.
From today, during the opening outings, hunters are permitted to shoot wood pigeons, rock doves and francolins, while hunting of turtle doves and quail will be permitted from Wednesday 2 September.
Hunters are required to declare their catch electronically via the “Artemis” application before leaving the hunting grounds.
Police have urged all hunters to show heightened care, responsibility and respect for the law during their outings. A statement noted that officers, particularly from the Anti-Poaching Squad, would be carrying out checks across the island, aimed at curbing poaching offences and hunting in prohibited areas, as well as providing assistance where required.
Hunters are asked to carry their hunting licence and firearms permit at all times for inspection purposes. They are further urged to wear clearly visible clothing, to show consideration for fellow hunters and the natural environment, and to take particular care given the heightened risk of fire.
