Facilities at the Menogeia Detention Centre are to be brought into operation as a temporary holding facility, in a move aimed at easing overcrowding in police cells and improving detention conditions.
The decision was taken by the Minister of Justice, Costas Fytiris, during a meeting attended by senior police officials and the Director and representatives of the Department of Public Works.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, Mr Fytiris instructed that all necessary works and operational arrangements be pursued immediately, so that the facilities at the Menogeia Detention Centre could be brought into use by the middle of September.
