Cyprus’s Department of Agriculture forwarded two applications to the European Commission on September 25, 2026, seeking Protected Geographical Indication status for “Athienou Bread” and “Athienou Loukoumi.”
According to an announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, both applications have already been reviewed at the national level and received a favorable decision from the Director of the Department of Agriculture.
Notice of that decision was published on September 25, 2026, in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus, along with the specifications for both products.
The ministry said the applications concern two products of Cypriot gastronomy that are of “excellent quality” and enjoy “great reputation.”
The two applications will now be reviewed by the European Commission, with a favorable decision expected sometime in 2027.
