Cyprus to host conference on overhauling tax dispute body, with international experts invited

October event at Presidential Palace to examine reform of Tax Council, drawing on practice from Ireland and Portugal

Cyprus’s Commissioner for Citizens’ Rights is to co-host a conference examining the future of the country’s Tax Council, the body responsible for resolving tax disputes, with a view to reforming its role as a hierarchical tax authority.

The event, titled “Tax Council: Transformation 2027”, will be held on 9 October at the Presidential Palace, under the patronage of the president and with content support from the Nicosia Bar Association. It is being co-organised by the Commissioner’s office and the Tax Council itself.

Organisers said the conference aimed to highlight the role the Tax Council plays in resolving tax disputes affecting citizens, to present good practice from abroad, and to discuss prospects for reforming the body.

The event will open with a presentation of Cyprus’s existing hierarchical mechanism for resolving tax disputes, followed by round-table discussions involving representatives of the House of Representatives, the Tax Council, the Tax Department and the Law Office.

International speakers will include Marie-Claire Money, chair of the Irish Tax Appeals Commission, and Tania Carvalhais Pereira, senior counsel at Portugal’s Centre for Administrative and Tax Arbitration, who will present examples of good practice in tax justice from their respective countries.

The conference will conclude with an open discussion and exchange of views among participants, followed by a reception.
