About 105 migrants picked up in two operations south of Crete

About 105 migrants were rescued in two separate operations south of Crete last night, the Hellenic Coast Guard said.

In the first, a Frontex aircraft spotted a boat carrying about 65 people 42 nautical miles south of Kali Limenes. A coast guard patrol vessel picked them up and took them to Kali Limenes.

Shortly afterwards, a Frontex aircraft spotted a second boat about 50 nautical miles south of Agia Galini. About 40 people were picked up by a coast guard patrol vessel and taken to the port of Agia Galini.

Both operations were coordinated by the Coast Guard’s joint rescue coordination centre and were completed in northerly winds of force 5.

The migrants are being taken to ports in southern Crete, where the competent authorities will carry out the standard procedures.
