The list of products to be sold at reduced prices in Greek supermarkets from 31 August continues to grow, following an agreement reached between the government and representatives of the retail sector.
The aim is to extend the price cuts to as many basic food and household items as possible, in order to ease costs for households.
Around 1,100 product codes, spanning both branded and private-label goods, have so far been included in the agreement, with the reductions set to remain in place for four months. The list covers essential food and everyday items, including meat, dairy products, eggs, pasta, baby food, coffee, detergents and school supplies.
Even a modest reduction in overall shopping costs, it was noted, could make a meaningful difference for consumers, with monthly savings of €30, €40 or even €50 potentially offering significant relief to household budgets.
Major supermarket chains have already signed up to the agreement, along with more than 60 suppliers, with discounts averaging close to 7 per cent.
At the same time, the government is aiming to keep food inflation in negative territory. Food inflation stood at -0.3 per cent in July, while, according to Reuters figures, supermarket inflation last month came in at -0.47 per cent, its lowest level since December 2024.
A strong agricultural harvest this year is also expected to contribute to falling prices. The absence of severe weather events, such as hailstorms, has benefited crops, a development that could lead to better prices for producers and, ultimately, for consumers.
