The first cargo of natural gas from Cypriot fields to be sent to Egypt for liquefaction will be shipped to Greece and fed into the Greek system, so that it can flow into Europe’s vertical supply corridor, Greek sources have said.
The plan was discussed by Energy Minister Michael Damianos and his Greek and Egyptian counterparts on the sidelines of a conference in Athens.
The same sources said the aim was to link East Mediterranean fields with the vertical corridor, with respect for international law and trade rules and without blackmail.
They stressed that channelling gas from Cyprus to Europe would enhance security of supply and Europe’s self-sufficiency in energy resources.
The plan involves linking the Cronos field with Israel’s Zohr via an underwater pipeline, expected to be completed within two years.
Damianos said gas would begin flowing within the first half of 2028.
