Cyprus: Drought and cyberattacks a threat to the Cypriot economy

The prolonged drought in Cyprus has been assessed by 50 executives from the economic sector has having the highest risk index and severity of consequences for the Cypriot economy.

This was demonstrated by research by the Council for Economy and Competitiveness.

The assessment also highlighted the risk of cyberattacks, worsening climate conditions and the failure to execute digital transformation.

During the presentation of the research, the president and members of the Economic Council pointed out that the lack of water will affect not only agricultural production but also tourism and the issue of the country’s self-sufficiency in basic necessities.

The survey –  conducted at the end of last year – assessed eighteen issues, including tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the possibility of a heated episode with Turkey, corruption and inflation.

In December, a virtual meeting of the MED9 member states on “Extreme Weather Phenomena in the Context of Climate Change”, was held at the level of Directors General/ Permanent Secretaries/Directors of the relevant Ministries.

It focused on the impacts of the climate crisis, particularly, extreme weather phenomena, and the urgent need to adapt to these challenges, emphasizing the effects on human lives and the environmental disasters in the Mediterranean region.
