1960: A serviceman’s wife and her Greek Cypriot neighbour had a miraculous escape when a gas-cooker explosion blew the roof off a house and caused damage estimated at £500.
The Englishwoman had asked her neighbour to examine a leaking gas cylinder which she could not repair.
When they returned to the kitchen, they found it full of fumes. They walked out, and seconds later, a huge explosion badly damaged the roof and started a fire.
The blaze was quickly extinguished by the Larnaca Fire Brigade.
