Cypriot wine lovers have something to celebrate.

The Cyprus Wine Lovers Association has successfully established March 1st as International “Giannoudi” Day to honor the native grape variety integral to the island’s viticultural heritage.

The inaugural celebration will take place today – Tuesday, February 25, at 10:30 a.m. – at the Technical University of Cyprus in Limassol.

Andreas Grigoriou, Director General of Agriculture and Rural Development, will make the proclamation on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou.

Giannoudi, a rare red grape variety, is celebrated for its resilience to Cyprus’ climate and its distinctive deep red wines with aromatic richness and unique structure.

Once limited, its cultivation is experiencing a revival due to the efforts of dedicated winemakers. Giannoudi wines, characterized by notes of red fruits, herbs, and spices, pair perfectly with Cypriot cuisine, offering unique tasting experiences.
