High Dust Concentrations Observed in Cyprus

ByFamagusta Gazette

Mar 5, 2025

High concentrations of dust are being observed in the air today, 5 March 2025, according to measurements from ground stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network operated by the Department of Labour Inspection.

The public, especially vulnerable groups (children, older people, and the infirm), are urged to avoid circulating in open spaces until the dust episode has passed. The small size of respirable particles in the dust may have negative effects on human health.

Employers, based on The Safety and Health at Work (Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons at Work During Dust Episodes) Order of 2022 (P. I. 410/2022), must take appropriate measures (organizational and/or technical) after assessing the risks their employees may face while working in open spaces. It is recommended that workers in such spaces use appropriate personal protection.

As of 09:00 am, the latest hourly dust concentrations measured in the following areas are:

  • Nicosia: 99.3 μg/m³
  • Limassol: 100.5 μg/m³
  • Larnaca: 105.5 μg/m³
  • Paralimni: 70.5 μg/m³
  • Paphos: 108.6 μg/m³
  • Zygi: 80.6 μg/m³
  • Ayia Marina Xyliatou: 68.0 μg/m³

“Dust” refers to respirable particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 10 μm (PM10) in the air. The limit value not to be exceeded for daily average concentrations is set at 50 μg/m³.
