Limassol is taking a major step towards solving its traffic issues with the potential introduction of a tram system. Well, they are talking about it, at least.

A conference on March 18 will bring in insights from French cities like Marseille, and it’s clear that action is urgently needed – with 90% of residents relying on private vehicles, the city’s traffic congestion is a serious problem.

Trams are more than just a solution to traffic; they offer a sustainable, efficient, and modern mode of transport.  We all know and love the Athens tram system – there is no reason we can’t have the same.

Mayor Yiannis Armeftis highlighted their ability to enhance public spaces and bring added value to urban life. By reducing reliance on private cars, trams can cut down on pollution and make the city more livable.

This isn’t the first time Cyprus has considered such a project.

About a decade ago, former Transport Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis proposed a train system to connect major cities, though it never came to fruition. Now, the focus is on trams, and the conference will delve into the technical and financial feasibility of this plan.

Bringing in experts and learning from successful examples in other cities, Limassol has the opportunity to make a significant change.

A tram system could revitalize the city, reduce congestion, and promote a culture of public transport.

It’s a smart, forward-thinking solution that could transform Limassol into a more efficient and eco-friendly urban center. Let’s hope the conference sets the stage for a brighter future for the city.
