FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides has declared the beginning of a “great effort” following the conclusion of the informal expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva.

Speaking after the talks, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing it as a significant and positive step toward resuming negotiations, which he emphasized as the ultimate goal.

The president outlined the achievements of the Geneva discussions, including the decision by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint a personal envoy and the agreement to hold another informal expanded meeting at the end of July.

He also highlighted the joint letter addressed to Guterres by the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, with copies sent to himself and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

He announced plans to convene a special meeting of the National Council in the near future to evaluate the outcomes of the Geneva talks and determine the Greek Cypriot side’s strategy ahead of the next U.N.-convened meeting.

He noted that the developments represent the first positive steps in the Cyprus issue since 2017, a sentiment echoed by the U.N. secretary-general.
