FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Drilling on the “Electra” target in block 5 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by the Exxon Mobil-Qatar Energy joint venture has been delayed until next week, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou has said.

The delay, initially expected to be completed by March 28, is due to additional measures needed to shield the drill rig from higher-than-expected geological pressures, Papanastasiou said.

The drilling has reached a depth of approximately 6,800 meters and is expected to be completed at 7,500 meters.

Progressing at a rate of about 20 meters per hour, the remaining depth should be reached within three to four days.

Preliminary indications of findings in the area are expected next week.
