FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE  – Australia has introduced new tobacco packaging laws, becoming the second country after Canada to require health warnings on individual cigarettes.

The regulations, which took effect on Tuesday, mandate that each cigarette bears one of eight warnings, such as “causes 16 cancers,” “damages your lungs,” and “poisons in every puff.”

The laws also include 10 updated graphic health warnings and inserts for tobacco packaging, offering detailed information on the benefits of quitting smoking.

These measures aim to build upon Australia’s groundbreaking plain packaging initiative from 2012, which replaced branding with graphic warnings.

Sarah Durkin of the Cancer Council praised the initiative, highlighting that while previous warnings were effective, new scientific findings underscore additional risks of smoking, such as DNA damage, diabetes, and second-hand smoke effects on children’s lungs.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicates a significant decline in daily smoking rates, dropping from 25% in 1993 to 8.3% in 2022-23.
