FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The governor of Ankara announced Tuesday that the ban on all protests in the Turkish capital will be extended until April 1, following demonstrations triggered by the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on March 19.
Similar bans are in effect in Istanbul and Izmir.
Turkey’s Interior Minister reported that over 1,000 people have been arrested since protests began.
Imamoglu, facing charges including corruption and terrorism support, denies the allegations.
His supporters claim the arrest is politically motivated, raising concerns about democratic freedoms in Turkey.
