At least four people were killed when a stampede broke out at the Umayyad Mosque in the Syrian capital Damascus on Friday, according to health authorities.
16 others, including children, were injured.
The governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, stated that panic broke out during “a civil event in the mosque.”
The Al-Watan newspaper reports that the stampede occurred when a person known on social media was distributing free food.
