The day before Germany’s closely watched election, tensions flared in the capital as approximately 100 neo-Nazis gathered for a demonstration, met by a forceful response from over 1,000 counter-protesters.

The neo-Nazi rally, organized by the same group that staged a similar march in December, once again drew significant opposition.

Throughout Saturday, Berlin police intervened multiple times to manage the confrontations between the two groups.

The neo-Nazi demonstrators began their march at Friedrichstrasse station, progressing toward the main railway station, while counter-demonstrators attempted to impede their advance with sit-in blockades.

The timing of these protests is particularly significant as Germans head to the polls on Sunday.

According to local polls, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is projected to secure around 20 percent of the vote, underscoring the contentious political climate.

The police presence remained strong throughout the day, aiming to maintain order and prevent escalation.
