Hundreds of illegal rubbish dumps across Cyprus, cleared over the past two years, are to be fitted with surveillance cameras in an effort to stop them being used again, it has been reported.
Under the headline “Big Brother for Rubbish Dumps… Conditional ‘Yes’ from the Data Protection Commissioner”, the newspaper Politis reported that a camera system would be installed at sites which, despite repeated clean-up efforts, have continued to be used as illegal dumping grounds.
The cameras, it said, would give local councils and municipal leaders a “preventive and deterrent” tool.
According to the report, around 800 such sites have been identified.
The decision to install cameras was taken at a meeting held at the Cypriot interior ministry on 20 July, attended by relevant officials, after the Data Protection Commissioner’s office agreed to the plan on condition that the positioning and angle of the cameras comply with personal data protection rules.
The newspaper added that a tender would be issued once the type and specification of the cameras had been settled, with the exact locations for installation still to be determined.
