1957: The Larnaca District Development Committee recently suggested that the government undertake a campaign to destroy rats and hornets at its own expense.

To cover the expenditure, they proposed a tax on carobs.

Following a request by Senior Agricultural Officer Mr. E.S. Porter, the Committee decided to allocate £300 for the destruction of rats and hornets.

In Cyprus, the most common hornet species is the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis).

These social insects are part of the Vespidae family and are known for their distinctive yellow and brown coloration.

Oriental hornets build their nests in various locations, including underground or in other cavities. They are generally more active during the warmer months and can be quite aggressive if their nests are disturbed.
