FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – China announced it will raise tariffs on U.S. imports to 84%, effective Thursday, in response to what it described as the White House’s “bullying practices.”
The move follows President Donald Trump’s implementation of a 104% tariff on Chinese goods, which took effect earlier today.
The new levy marks a sharp increase from the previous 34% tariff imposed by Beijing.
Chinese officials criticized the U.S. for escalating trade tensions, accusing the administration of unilateralism and protectionism.
In addition to the U.S.-China standoff, steeper tariffs targeting 60 other countries—labeled by Trump as the “worst offenders” in trade—have also been enacted.
The president claimed that affected nations are scrambling to negotiate, though experts warn the measures could lead to higher consumer prices and economic instability.
