Concern has been raised over the inadequate staffing of lifeguard towers on Cyprus’s beaches.
Savvas Ioannou, head of beaches at the Larnaca District Administration, told Cyprus radio that only 10 of the district’s 19 towers were currently staffed, owing to a lack of interest among candidates holding the required qualifications.
The shortage of lifeguards remains equally acute in the Paphos district, where 8 of 33 towers remain closed.
The Deputy District Officer, Froso Georgiou, also speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, said greater mobilisation was needed from clubs and private organisations, alongside better efforts to inform young people of the opportunities the profession offered.
