Cuba releases over 500 prisoners and reaches deal with US

Cuba has said it will release 553 prisoners as part of a deal with the United States. In return, the United States will remove Cuba from its list of countries that support terrorism , President Joe Biden’s administration said.

The United States is also easing economic sanctions on Cuba and reversing President Donald Trump’s strict policies from his previous presidency.

The Catholic Church helped bring about the agreement.

The improvement in relations is likely to be short-lived. The Trump administration, which takes office next week, is expected to tighten US policy towards Cuba. Incoming Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been a harsh critic of the Cuban communist regime. Rubio’s parents are from Cuba.
