Customs in Cyprus seize undeclared watches and smuggled tobacco

Larnaca Airport

Cyprus Customs officers have uncovered nearly 46,000 euros’ worth of undeclared luxury goods at Larnaca Airport, along with a haul of smuggled tobacco and cannabis products in Limassol.

The airport find included unregistered luxury watches, clothing and footwear discovered in the luggage of a Russian couple holding Cypriot citizenship. The pair, aged 55 and 62, had flown in from Switzerland via France.

They were fined 5,000 euros and ordered to pay more than 10,000 euros in duties and taxes.

Separately, Customs officers in Limassol seized large quantities of illegal tobacco and cannabinoid products following a car chase.

The vehicle was flagged down during a routine check on July 13, but the driver sped off before officers could make an arrest. He remains at large.

A search of the abandoned car uncovered 4kg of shisha tobacco, 37 cartons of cigarettes — 200 to a carton — and 450g of rolling tobacco, all of which were confiscated.

Two days later, on July 15, officers inspecting a shipping container that had arrived from Greece found six bottles of cannabidiol oil along with other banned substances.
