FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The number of asylum applications to the EU, Norway, and Switzerland fell by about 11% last year, according to the European Asylum Support Office (EUAA).
Around 1.01 million asylum applications were registered in 2024, a slight decrease from 1.14 million in 2023.
Fewer asylum seekers came from Syria last year, but they still constituted the largest group of people seeking asylum in Europe.
Germany received the most asylum applications with 237,000, accounting for 23% of the total. Almost a third of the applicants in Germany were from Syria, followed by Afghanistan and Turkey.
Cyprus and Greece received the most applications in relation to their population sizes. The EUAA’s report highlights the ongoing challenges and shifts in asylum trends across Europe.
