Cyprus’ Veterinary Services and police have identified four cases of illegal movements involving 283 sheep, goats and cattle as part of ongoing checks aimed at containing the spread of foot‑and‑mouth disease.
Officials said the cases involve 100 sheep and goats in Tseri, 30 in Potamia, 130 cattle in Livadia and 23 cattle in Geri.
Police are investigating and are expected to take action under the law.
Authorities said some livestock owners have obstructed inspections, and in several culling operations the number of animals found was significantly lower than the number registered in the official system.
Officials are examining whether illegal movement or concealment of animals may have contributed to the spread of the virus.
The Veterinary Services warned that farmers who violate the regulations will not be eligible for compensation.
