A child’s use of the international hand signal for distress led to the conviction of a man for domestic violence and a 25-month prison sentence in Dhekelia, authorities said.
Sovereign Base Area Police praised the child’s bravery and quick thinking, which helped officers intervene in what they described as a dangerous and escalating situation.
Police responded to an anonymous tip reporting shouting from a home in the Dhekelia area.
When officers arrived, the family refused to speak. According to Detective Inspector Fanos Christodoulou, one of the four children in the home began making facial expressions and hand gestures that officers recognized as a silent plea for help.
The man was immediately arrested and later convicted. The family’s identity has not been disclosed.
“This was obviously a highly distressing situation for the family, one that could very easily have continued,” Christodoulou said this week. “It took a great deal of bravery for the child to communicate with our officers, and I am relieved that they were able to recognize the signal and get the family to safety.”
The international distress signal involves holding one hand up with the thumb tucked into the palm, then folding the fingers down over the thumb — a gesture designed to silently indicate abuse or danger.
