Cyprus: Dubravka Suica Highlights Mediterranean’s Role in Climate and Energy Challenges

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE- Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica emphasized the Mediterranean’s critical role in tackling climate change and energy security.

Her visit to Cyprus focuses on discussions related to the Agreement for the Mediterranean.

Suica highlighted the European Union’s efforts to promote clean technologies and renewable energy in the region, pointing to the southern Mediterranean coast’s potential for cost-effective energy production.

The Commissioner also noted that the Mediterranean is warming 20% faster than the global average, making climate change a pressing concern.

She called for collaboration among governments, the private sector, and civil society to achieve a “fair and inclusive green transition,” with a focus on expanding renewable energy and protecting the environment.

According to the data of the Meteorological Office, July 2024 was the hottest July in the climate history of Cyprus.

A high temperature warning was issued for 13 nights in July.
