FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Parliament’s Internal Affairs Committee has begun debating a draft law proposed by EDEK President Marinos Sizopulos that would increase the number of deputies from 56 to 63 and introduce “regional deputies.”
According to the Phileleftheros newspaper, Article 62 (2) of the Constitution states the number of deputies is 90, with 70% elected from the Greek Cypriot community and 30% from the Turkish Cypriot community.
The proposal would increase the Greek Cypriot community’s allocation to 63 deputies, up from 56.
The regulation does not require a constitutional amendment and is estimated to cost taxpayers no more than €600,000 per year.
Deputies elected under the proposed status would earn a monthly salary of €6,549, the newspaper reported.
