Cyprus Energy Minister Michalis Damianou took part this week in the second Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, representing President Nikos Christodoulides, and urged EU cooperation on building an energy system that is secure, affordable and aligned with the bloc’s climate goals.
In his intervention, Damianou said all EU member states agree on the need for closer coordination to strengthen competitiveness and meet emissions targets.
He added that the upcoming Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU is working “continuously for tangible results” across the Union’s legislative agenda.
Damianou stressed that member states must retain the right to determine their own national energy mix, noting that energy security and diversification can be achieved through a combination of renewables and nuclear power — provided nuclear energy is used peacefully, transparently and under strict safety standards.
He also highlighted the need for investment in infrastructure, flexible grids and workforce training to ensure the Energy Union remains effective and supports industrial competitiveness and affordable energy for citizens.
