The implementation of the “Great Sea Interconnector” (GSI) project, intended to connect the electricity grids of Cyprus and Greece, has been delayed, according to reports in the press.

Alithia newspaper highlighted in an article titled “Geopolitical Risk Delays Cable” that the primary obstacle for the project in the first two months of 2025 is geopolitical risk.

The newspaper reported that the work on the cable has not progressed according to the initial plans and timetable due to “Turkish provocations.”

The F493 TCG Gelibolu frigate allegedly “harassed” the Levoli Relume ship, which was conducting work on the cable connection, and Turkish forces reportedly also “harassed” an Italian ship north of Crete.

Alithia further reported that the “Independent Electricity Transmission Operator of Greece” (ADMIE) and the Greek government had announced that the research work on the Levoli Relume ship would continue within the next two weeks, though there is a possibility of a delay of up to two months.

The lack of a definitive and clear timetable is cited as another indicator of the uncertainty posed by geopolitical risks.
